A dedicated group of Orthodox monks (who wish to remain anonymous) have created a fresh English translation of the Masoretic Hebrew text of the Psalter, corrected to the Septuagint. A frequently asked question The Psalms aren't in numerical order in this Psalter. Why is that? Answer That was done intentionally. This edition of the Psalter was created for prayer, at home or in church, rather than for reference. It's not just another Book of Psalms. That means the Psalms are organized according to the established cycle of daily readings for Orthodox Christian monastic practice. We follow the same order in our churches and our homes. If you'd like more information for reference purposes, we recommend the Book of Psalms (and its accompanying notes) in the Orthodox Study Bible.

Really like this version of the Psalter. Translation is comfortable for one who speaks American english. My wife and I will read the complete psalter aloud together twice during Lent and once through during the Nativity fast. This version seems to flow more smoothly than some others especially when reading aloud. Also like that it is translated by Orthodox Christian Monks.

The Ancient Faith Psalter (Audible Audio Edition) Monks of the Orthodox Church Fr John Oliver Ancient Faith Publishing Books Reviews

Great reading plan for the Psalter. Great translation.
Although I have always loved the Psalter According to the Seventy published by Holy Transformation Monastery this new version of the psalter by Ancient Faith Publication is wonderful. This is a more contemporary translation and offers a version. Ancient Faith Publication also plans to print both paper book or leather hard book versions.

Just comment on an earlier review. The reviewer thought that psalm 120 (119) was missing, etc. However the Ancient Faith Publication psalter does not numerical listing of psalms but instead lists the prayers for the week of matins and vespers.
For those who think the Psalter ends with number 119/118, that's because the psalms are arranged differently when read in their weekly liturgical cycle. Psalms 109-118 and 120-134 are read earlier in the week, and thus are placed "out of order" in this edition. Hope you have already figured that out.
Wonderful translation of the psalms! Works great on , too.
I was actually looking forward to this Psalter. My reasons were simple kathismas divided into days, RSV Catholic edition English, compact. I made a mistake in buying it. Don't buy this Psalter if you are even remotely interested in praying the Psalter according to pious Orthodox custom.

To begin with. It is $20 for an economy, single ink, paper back with the cheapest possible paper used for printing. Printing such a Psalter in China would cost c. $3 a copy shipped if more than 2500 are ordered. The price would decrease with larger orders. This is a $10, max. $12 Psalter.

The introduction totally lacks an Orthodox formation. OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST, the WORD OF GOD, quoted from the Septuagint. The Septuagint is the Old Testament of the Church. What in the world possesses anyone to cite the Masoretic text, a text specifically prepared to obscure or excise messianic prophesies which confirm Orthodox christology?! What hubris to write, "the Septuagint numbering is included for those who might use it." 99%+ of the Orthodox Church uses it. Including the supermajority of Orthodox in America.

There are no prayers included which customarily are included in Orthodox prayer of the Psalter, not from the Horologion, not even the Trisagion prayers. In the hubritic wisdom of the "monks" who spliced this work together, they even found it a great idea to omit the glories between the stases of the kathismas. Talk of instruction on how to read the Psalter for the Departed, for special intentions, for others would surely merit cries of "popery" from the "monks" and publishers of this Eastern Rite Protestant work. Low Church Anglicanism might find this Psalter appropriate.

This Psalter is a work incomplete, and as it is laid out, a work unsuitable for Orthodox worship and even private Orthodox devotion - do not buy it and avoid the proud "monks" who published it if you know who they are.

I like the You-Who Catholic edition of the RSV. But its publishers aren't as bold as to write against the Church's traditional numbering of the Psalms. Thankfully, this work isn't as bad as the dreadful Yahwist, liturgical works of the Ecumenical Monks of New Skete. But that isn't saying much in this Psalter's defense. The idea of dividing the Psalter into the appointed daily kathismas seems interesting. But the Eastern Rite Protestant "monks" didn't find it necessary to include the glories in the stases. The days are poorly divided. The work has no clear transitions. Just a horrid, sectarian format. The font and print size are satisfactory.

Ancient Faith Press has put out some good works and some questionable works. This Eastern Rite Protestant Psalter is among the latter. It does not reflect established Orthodox practice of praying the Psalter in personal devotion nor does it even seem to be concerned with learning how the Psalter is supposed to be prayed in pious, Orthodox practice. Ancient Faith Press, when are you going to respect the piety and orthopraxis of the Church? When are you going to finally acquaint yourself with it? I am ashamed for you.

I gave this work 2 stars because I understand that there may have been a genuine desire to produce a You-Who Orthodox Psalter which could benefit Orthodox believers. Sadly, the work does not reflect an Orthodox formation, betrays an animus toward genuine Orthodox piety, and is incomplete to the negligent extent that it should be avoided by sincere and pious Orthodox Christians. This is not the Psalter you want for your personal devotions if you wish to cultivate Orthodox piety. Buy the Jordanville Psalter or even the Boston Psalter and acclimate yourself to Liturgical English until someone produces a modern English Orthodox Psalter reflecting Orthodox piety.
This is a great text for those who want to pray the psalms and are looking for a version in modern English. I agree with several of the others that it might have made more sense to go directly from the Septuagint in the translation but it's nonetheless an excellent text.
I use this book as part of my daily prayers. Also use during free time for a quick read and to contemplate the meaning of the psalms. Easy to read.
Really like this version of the Psalter. Translation is comfortable for one who speaks American english.
